Kindergarten Curriculum

 

 

 

 

Main Objective:

An awareness of sound-symbol relationships (phonics) is introduced through the Wilson Language program called “Fundations”.  Our curriculum programs are designed to complement those taught in the public school Kindergarten programs.

 

 

Science:

1.    Life Sciences - characteristics of living things


2.    Physical science - the study of non-living things


3.    Earth and Space Sciences - investigate features of the Earth and its

    Atmosphere

 

Life Sciences - characteristics of living things

 

·     Characteristics and comparison of plants and animals e.g. color, shape, size,

      texture

·     Life cycle of plants and animals

·     Identify similarities and differences among animals

·     Describe the appearance and behavior of variety of animals
 

Physical science - the study of non-living things

·     Describe properties of materials, colors, shape, texture, size and weight

·     Difference between solids, liquids and gases

·     Identify common type of forces (magnetism and gravity)

·     Describe motion and changes in motion

·     Recognize changes in properties of matter with water, heat and time

 

Earth and Space Sciences - investigate features of the Earth and its atmosphere

·    Investigate features of the Earth and its atmosphere

·    Understand solar system

·    Identify characteristics of season

·    Describe the features of an environment and properties of air

·    Identify living and nonliving materials found in soil

·    Characteristics of rocks, soil and water

·    Effect of weather on living and nonliving things

·    Experiment with weather and temperature

 

Math

·        Sort and classify objects using one or more attributes

·        Recognize and write numbers to 100

·        Count orally by ones, five, and tens

·        Count forward and backward by 2’s to and from 30

·        Name ordinal numbers first through tenth

·        Add and subtract using manipulatives (Cheerios, candy or other objects that can be picked up)

·        Understand spatial relationships (top/bottom, near/far, before/behind)

·        Compare quantities by estimating, weighing, and measuring (length, volume and weight)

·        Introduction to data collection and graphing

·        Recognize patterns and  basic geometrical shapes

·        Introduction and Estimation of time on an analog clock using the hour hand

·        Introduction of coins (Penny, nickel, dime, quarter and Dollar Bill) and counting coins

·        Recite the days of the week and months of the year

 

Language Arts

·        Recognize and write all of the letters of the alphabet in upper and lowercase forms

·        Write his first and last name

·        Follow all the stages of  writing independently

·        Phonological Awareness (Understand that spoken language consist of parts: Word Awareness: A sentence consist of words, Syllable Awareness: A word consist of separate syllables, Phoneme Awareness: A syllable consists of separate sounds or phonemes)

·        Develop vocabulary from reading aloud and classroom discussions

·        Fluent Reading: develop quick and automatic word recognition

·        Learn sounds corresponding to vowels and consonants

·        Use initial consonant sounds and sound patterns to read words (for example, f + an = fan; r + an = ran)

·        Use phonics in reading

·        Identify several sight words, including names of colors

·        Recognize and use rhyming words

·        Listen to the story and retell a story including details

·        Put events of a story in order

·        Write simple sentences using sight words and phonics skills

 

Listening and Communication

·        Listen attentively

·        Raise hands or wait to speak

·        Follow rules in the classroom

·        Act on instruction and repeat spoken directions

·        Engage in question-and-answer dialogue with classmates and teachers

·        Work as a team on projects or problem solving

 

Social studies

·        Understand how an individual is similar and different from others

·        Understand as a part of group and importance of sharing

·        Identify and describe basic needs of families and family structure

·        Identify various functions of the helpers in the class

·        Identify different roles of an individual in the family, school and community

·        Identify major religious and civic holidays and historical figures; appreciate similarities and differences across individuals, families and traditions; understand different roles in communities
