Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum

 

 

 

 

Main objective:

Here the "Theme Curriculum" is pivotal.  This curriculum sets the stage for the school for special holidays, historic events, etc.  Material is created by the teacher for her group.  It includes Units of Material on such topics as: Community, Science, Health, Holidays, Etc. “The Creative Curriculum for Preschool” is also used for curriculum.

 

These children will be reinforcing math concepts. An awareness of sound-symbol relationships (phonics) is introduced using the Wilson Language Phonic program “Fundations”.  The purpose of this program is to help your child identify each sound in a word to help him/her decode better.

Cognitive

 Reading skills

·        Identifies some alphabet letters by shapes, especially those in his/her own name.

·        Recognizes that letters form words.

·        Recognizes that it is the print that is read in stories.

·        Develop a love of books and reading

·        Exploring materials in Core curriculum themes

·        An awareness of sound: symbol relationships, an ability to recognize all alphabet

symbols.

·        Mastery of name writing

Math

·        Identifies an understanding of number and numerical operations

·        Develop knowledge of spatial concepts, e.g., shapes and measurement

·        Understands patterns, relationships and classification

·        Develops knowledge of sequence and temporal awareness

·        Use mathematical knowledge to represent, communicate and solve problems

·        Ordering of numbers 1-20, recognition, number- set matching, transcribing

·        Mastery of shapes, to include triangle, square, rectangle, circle, cube, oval, cylinder

 Science

·        Develop inquiry skills, including problem-solving and decision-making

·        Observe and investigate the properties of objects, both living and nonliving

·        Explore the concept of change in both living and nonliving entities and in the

environment

·        Develop an awareness of the environment and human responsibility for its care

·        Mastery of color recognition, color blending

 

Social Skills

Working/playing in a group situation children will:

·        demonstrate self-confidence

·        identify and express feelings

·        sharing toys/sharing experiences

·        exhibit positive interactions with other children and adults

·        exhibit pro-social behaviors

·        exhibit attending and focusing skills

·        Learn the proper use of materials and toys, what is a toy?  What is a tool?  For example,

            puzzles are tabletop activities.  They will be used that way and returned to the puzzle

            rack.  Blocks will be returned to shelves is the prescribed manner.

 

Physical:

Fine motor

·        Demonstrates an increase in fine motor skills (i.e., hand movements that require control

            dexterity and eye-hand coordination).

·        Independently selects and engages in fine-motor activities of his/her choice.

·        Mastery of cutting skills

Visual arts

·        Plans and works independently to create own art representations

·        Recognizes and describes various art forms (e.g., photographs, sculpture, paintings).

·        Uses different mediums of materials such as crayons, tempera, paste, scissors, tools,

            pastels, etc...

Gross motor development

·        Demonstrates large movements (e.g., hopping, galloping, jumping, running and

            marching).

·        Uses objects and props to demonstrate coordination and expands spatial and cognitive

learning

·        Independently selects gross motor activities in which to participate

·        Demonstrates safe behaviors while using playground equipment and participating    in

            activities

 Music and dance movement development

·        Sings alone or with others

·        Uses a variety of musical instruments to create music

·        Explores different ways of moving his/her body with and without music

·        Attempts to move to the beat of music

·        Responds to changes in tempo (e.g. moving slowly or quickly, on tiptoes to soft music,

            gliding to a waltz)

 

Basic Life Skills

·        Identifies unique characteristics of themselves and others

·        Communicate about their family, family roles and family traditions

·        Demonstrate knowledge of neighborhood and community

·        Participate in activities that reflect the cultures within their classroom and their
